Abilities Empowered is a not-for-profit organisation that supports and empowers students through education and skills training for employment. Our goal is to empower all our students with the capacity, confidence, resilience and self-esteem to maximise their abilities. Abilities Empowered is envisaged for Special Needs and Disadvantaged students and its success is dependent on close and active engagement and partnership with schools, health practitioners and special needs experts. Prof Sen is determined to take on this challenge, and her sheer passion, drive and commitment to this cause can be clearly evidenced through the commendable work she is doing in this area.
Professor K. Sen has had over three decades of teaching experience in over three continents and four countries. As founder of Achievers Academy Australia, she has been serving the educational needs of the students of Sydney for over a decade. She always has had a keen interest in giving back to society and the community at large. Over the years, Prof Sen has found a gap in the learning of ‘differently abled’ and disadvantaged kids and has always wanted to reach out to them.
We believe that all children have special gifts or abilities. Anyone working with a special needs child has the responsibility to identify those gifts since they often go unnoticed. People too often focus on the deficiencies of special needs children, but more attention should be focused on their gifts or abilities. All of us need to understand and celebrate the differences that make each individual special. We believe that understanding diversity is an important skill not only as part of a classroom, but as part of a community.
We believe that inclusivity embraces the idea that everyone is an individual and their diversity is respected. Inclusion starts from a recognition of the differences between students and builds on such differences to minimise barriers in education for all students. Students with special needs have the right to access an inclusive curriculum that is broad, balanced and relevant and at the same time meets their individual needs.
